Meet Katie LaDow! Instructor of the Month!
Hometown - Homewood, IL (south suburbs of Chicago)
Mom to boy/girl twins Marvin and Nora who are 17 months old
How were you first introduced to Stroller Strides/Fit4Mom?
I joined NPN when I was pregnant and saw Stroller Strides mentioned a few times. After having the twins I always wanted to attend a class but I worked five days a week and was never able to make it. However, that is when lighting struck (see next answer)!
What made you want to become an instructor?
Group fitness classes are my favorite type of exercises and I have attended some type of step, kickboxing, yoga or strength training class since I was a teenager. I have always wanted to become a group fitness instructor but was never sure how to get certified or couldn't seem to find the time. When I decided to resign from my full-time corporate job I still wanted something for "me" and I happened to see that Fit4Mom Chicago was looking for instructors. I applied and heard from Jackie Dorris the next day and was well on my way! It could not have been a bigger "aha" moment for me, the perfect blend of exercise, doing something I have always wanted to do, having something for myself and bringing my kids with me!
What did you do before becoming an instructor?
Before becoming an instructor - I graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Accounting. I decided that becoming a CPA was not for me and went to work in various consulting and human resources roles after college. When I left the corporate world to become a stay at home mom I was working for a large insurance company in the city as a National Account Manager for their Long-Term Care line of business.
What is your favorite part of instructing?
My favorite part of instructing, hands down, is meeting and talking with all of the moms who attend Stroller Strides classes. I am so lucky to have Marvin and Nora but the first year of adjusting to having two babies at once was challenging for me. Even though I am the instructor I feel like the moms who come to class are so kind, friendly, supportive and just overall great people to be around. I am so inspired by everyone who makes it to class in the cold weather so that they can do something for themselves and all of my moms have given me the strength and support that I need to be a better mom and SS instructor.
What is your favorite non-kid song that gets you moving?
"That's What Love Can Do" by Boy Krazy. It just makes me feel happy and ready to move.*Katie teaches MWF at 11:00 at Lil Sluggers!
